The Wines of Isabel Salgado: A Galician Vertical 🌿

FOUR VINTAGES OF ONE EXTRAORDINARY WINE — PLUS A LITTLE GODELLO MAGIC

Isabel Salgado is back at Martha’s Vineyard for a third time — and this evening we’re doing one of our favourite kinds of tasting — a true vertical: her Siah, the very same wine, across four consecutive vintages — 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 — tasted side by side so you can watch it change year by year.

We’ll open with a glass of her Abalón to set the scene, then line up the four Siah vintages and let them tell their own story.

Relaxed, hands-on and genuinely fascinating — this is wine discovery at its most fun.

🍇 What exactly is a vertical tasting — and why bother?

A vertical tasting means tasting the same wine across several different vintages — in our case, Isabel’s Siah from 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, lined up side by side.

Here’s the magic: same vineyard, same grape, the same hands that made it — the only thing that changes is the year. So every difference in the glass comes down to how the wine has aged and what each growing season gave it. You’re tasting time itself.

And please don’t believe the myth that you need a trained, expert palate for this. You couldn’t be further from the truth. Stood next to each other, the changes are obvious — even to a complete beginner. The youngest is bright and zippy; the older vintages turn rounder, deeper and more golden. Isabel herself will be pouring, explaining vintage by vintage exactly why each one tastes the way it does.

It’s the single best way to really understand how a wine evolves — and a lot more fun than it sounds.

đŸŸ THE LINEUP đŸŸ

đŸ„‚ AbalĂłn — 100% Godello, Valdeorras (to start)
Isabel’s own-label Godello, and the wine the Spanish wine world can’t stop talking about — because the quality-for-the-price is, frankly, a little ridiculous. Named after the abalone fossil she found in her own vineyard (proof the land was once an ancient seabed), it brings a saline, stony elegance that’s all its own. Isabel will tell you exactly how she makes it — and why it costs what it does.

đŸ„‚ Siah 2025 — Treixadura, Ribeiro
The baby of the line-up. Bright, zippy and alive with stone fruit and freshness — Treixadura caught in its first flush of youth.

đŸ„‚ Siah 2024 — Treixadura, Ribeiro
A year on and you’ll already notice it: a little rounder, a little calmer, the fruit settling into something more complete.

đŸ„‚ Siah 2023 — Treixadura, Ribeiro
Now we’re into proper development — more texture, more weight, the creaminess that makes this wine such a brilliant partner for food.

đŸ„‚ Siah 2022 — Treixadura, Ribeiro
The elder statesman. Deeper, golden and layered — this is where you really see what time does to a great white. Tasted against the 2025, the difference will stop you in your tracks.

YOUR HOST — AND YOUR WINEMAKER

Martha will guide the evening with her usual warmth — and we promise it’s more fun than a World Cup football game. The real treat? Isabel Salgado herself will be in the room, pouring her own wines and explaining, vintage by vintage, exactly why each one tastes the way it does. Questions aren’t just welcome — they’re the whole point.

đŸ‘©â€đŸŒŸ A little about Isabel — though she’d never tell you any of this herself

Isabel Salgado de Andrea is one of the most respected winemakers in Galicia, with around 30 years in the cellar. For more than two decades she has been the winemaker and director of Bodegas Fillaboa — one of the great names of RĂas Baixas and a member of Grandes Pagos de España.

An agricultural engineer trained in Madrid and Turin, she has also served as president of Galicia’s Orujo (spirits) Regulatory Council, and is a passionate champion of women in winemaking.

Her wines speak for themselves: Fillaboa’s “La Fillaboa 1898” was named Best in Show at the Decanter World Wine Awards — chosen ahead of nearly 17,000 other wines — and the estate has collected more than 40 medals along the way. Siah and Abalón are her own personal projects, and tonight she’s pouring them for you in person.
